How did you get started?
Neither of us grew up farming, so we started by apprenticing on a flower farm here in Ohio. Read more here.
Each stem you purchase from our farm has been planned from the very seed and specially handpicked. Our flowers are grown with organic practices in mind, and by purchasing them you are supporting your local farmer and community. Our employees are an integral part of our team as well as our designers, whose expertise adds to our mission. Our arrangements are not the traditional, formulaic designs but lush, very textural, and seasonally inspired. We promise a truly unique, handcrafted and locally made design. Or, join the Slow Flower movement.
How can I find local flowers in my area?
Visit the website of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers to find local flowers in your state.
How big is your farm?
We live on 10 acres, but not all of that is in production. We have about 3.5 acres tillable land for annual production, 1 acre of perennials, and 8 structures for season extension. Our heated structures (greenhouses) are used for both plug production, housing stock plants, and producing blooms in the earliest part of the season. Our unheated structures (high tunnels) are used for both season extension and for protection from the elements for our summer lisianthus production.
Can we visit the farm?
As we are an operating farm, we do not offer individual farm tours. Our retail flower market opens in the spring, and you can walk around on a self-guided tour when the farm is open if you would like.
Can my garden club come for a tour?
Unfortunately, we are not available for any personalized garden club tours or talks this season as we finding our main focus must remain on running the farm. Feel free to visit the farm stand when it opens in the spring and you are more than welcome to take a self-guided tour of the farm anytime it is open.
Will you be doing the annual farm tour?
We are not doing the annual farm tour this year, but see above for other ways to visit the farm. Also, we are providing tours for folks in the industry during both Cultivate'17 and the ASCFG regional meeting.
Can we use your flower fields for a photo session?
Being an operating farm, our flowers are picked daily, and most flowers are picked before they are fully open. We suggest either you or your photographer coming out to the farm during open business hours so you can scout the area. Keep in mind that since flowers are always being picked, the landscape may change between scouting date and your scheduled photo session. Send us an email to let us know you are interested.
Can we use your farm as a venue for my wedding or event?
Unfortunately we are not set up to be a venue for weddings and events. While we would love to provide the floral designs for your wedding, it will have to be at another location off site.
Where do I start learning more about flower farming?
Do you offer any type of classes or workshops?
We are always scheduling new things, so join our newsletter by filling out the form at the bottom of this page, and we will be sure to update you when they are added to the calendar. When they are posted, you will be able to register through our BigCartel site.
We just got our barn up, so we are looking into the logistics of hosting an on-farm intensive workshop for farmer florists, or maybe a flower farmer's business school. Stay tuned for more details!
Do you ship flowers?
We can ship flowers for wholesale accounts, but the number of shipments will be limited to ensure we can provide for our local clientele first. Send us an email to check availability.
What is in season?
Check the Our Flowers page.
Are you available for speaking engagements or interviews?
Since we learned so much from our mentors and by attending conferences, we love to pay it forward! Have Steve and/or Gretel come to your conference to discuss operating a successful flower farm and all of the intricacies involved in having both production and design, retail and wholesale, and intense season extension in the Midwest. Many of our concepts on the economies of scale, farm efficiencies, as well as plant health, are transferable to the vegetable growing world. We want to help others treat their farm as a business. A small honorarium is requested, as well as travel fees if the conference is out of state. We look forward to inspiring growers in your area! If interested, visit our resources page for more information or please use our contact page.
Can I order flowers for a birthday/sympathy arrangement for delivery?
We do not offer delivery service for daily arrangements, but you can visit the Flower Market at Sunny Meadows Flower Farm to pick up something perfect for gift giving or to brighten up your home. If you need something outside our standard bouquet offered at the farm stand, or open hours, send us an email to see if we can accommodate your request.
Can my garden club come for a special tour?
We offer tours for garden clubs and other similar groups on Tuesdays and Fridays during the months of June through October. Contact us for availability. During the tour, we'll walk around the farm and talk about crops and growing practices. Tours are $5 per person with a $100 minimum and usually last about an hour. We will also have our farm stand set up so that you can buy flowers, soap and plants after the tour.
